Jennifer, Director

Jennifer is highly regarded as one of New Zealand’s leading employment and health and safety lawyers, with a wealth of experience in employment litigation, industrial relations, health and safety, complex restructures, large scale Holidays Act issues, executive remuneration and regulation, executive exits and immigration law. She regularly advises on novel and complex legal issues and is passionate about providing her clients with effective tailored solutions.

She has recently been listed as a ‘Leading Individual’ in The Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2023, and is rated one of the leading employment lawyers in the world, by Chambers Global.

Jennifer is regularly featured in the media presenting commentary on employment law issues of the day. She frequently writes articles and contributes to media reports in the press, radio and television. You will also find Jennifer speaking at many distinguished conferences, seminars and meetings that are attended by professionals from all over New Zealand, giving tips and advice related to employment law, and Health and Safety.

Ethelred, Senior Associate

Ethelred Chey is an employment law specialist with over 13 years’ experience gained from working in commercial law firms and in-house positions within the public and private sectors.

Ethelred has assisted clients in all aspects of employment relations, including collective bargaining, restructuring, disciplinary matters, legislative compliance, health and safety and dispute resolution.

Ethelred is also qualified in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations.  He has been able to utilise his broad experience of working directly with managers, HR and payroll to provide pragmatic advice, anticipate potential issues, explore solutions and improve outcomes in the workplace for his clients.

Ethelred has been ranked and recognised as a ‘Next Generation Lawyer’, and a ‘Recommended Lawyer’ in employment law by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific directory.

Highlights of his work include:

  • Representing and successfully defending a large employer against a personal grievance claim before the Employment Relations Authority.
  • Acting as the lead advocate in collective bargaining, and successfully conducting negotiations for collective agreements in the private and public sectors.
  • Acting for an employer in the technology sector in legal proceedings against former employees in relation to breach of contract claims.
  • Advising on several complex disciplinary matters involving allegations of harassment, abusive conduct, incapacity, and dishonesty.
  • Providing advice on the Holidays Act, payroll remediation and acting for employers during the investigation and enforcement by a Labour Inspector.
  • Advising a multinational freight company during a broad restructure process across multiple departments, from the start to finish.
  • Assisting with due diligence during mergers and acquisitions, and providing post-acquisition advice.
  • Providing compliance advice to international employers in the technology sector, and reviewing their employment policies, practices, and agreements.
  • Providing advice on the Human Rights Act, and Privacy Act obligations to international employers in the technology sector.
  • Acting for an international company and managing the investigation and disciplinary process following sexual harassment allegations.

Lauren, Solicitor

Lauren joined Jennifer Mills and Associates in October 2022 and has recently been admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court.
